With 70 tons of steel composite armor and a more-than-fifteen hundred horsepower turbine power train controlled by computerized operating systems the M1 Abrams is the most technologically advanced and lethal main battle tank in the world. Maintaining the M1 tank is the responsibility of the Abrams Tank System Maintainer.

In this career field your duties may include diagnosing and troubleshooting tank system malfunctions along with performing maintenance on the suspension, steering, hydraulic, and auxiliary power systems and maintaining the turret, gun, and fire control systems. Ultimately, you will be responsible for keeping the M1 Abrams tank operational and battle ready. To excel in this career field you should: be physically fit in order to lift heavy tools, components and parts, possess strong problem solving, analytical, and critical thinking skills, have an interest in working with electrical equipment, with high attention to detail and an interest in working with diesel and turbine engines.

After successfully completing Army Basic Combat Training, you will attend approximately 16 weeks of Advanced Individual Training at Fort Benning, Georgia. There, you will spend time in both shop and field environments learning electronic and mechanical principles and concepts, troubleshooting mechanical and electrical problems, learning to read and use wiring diagrams and technical manuals and the operation, testing and maintenance of lethal weapons systems.

After successful completion of training, you may be eligible for worldwide assignments as a member of a Brigade Combat Team. You may have the opportunity to advance in your career through additional technical, tactical, and leadership training. The skills you learn such as teamwork, discipline, and leadership, may help you transition from the military to the civilian work force where you may find employment as an electronics technician or a heavy equipment mechanic with companies that design, build, and test weapons for the military.
