Eating In Under Three Minutes: Basic Training Q&A

I'm Private William Reinig and I'm going to be answering a question from Angel from Luisa, Puerto Rico, question is; "How many times do you eat at basic training and do you have free time in basic?"

Well the good thing is you get three square meals a day but its fast food. I don't mean that it's hamburgers and fries. I mean you have you have from the time you sit down to the time you're done eating two to three minutes from the get go, from red phase, white phase, you don't get a whole lot of time to eat. So you learn to eat with a quickness. Even if its hot, your going to end up burning your tongue, you're going to end up burning the roof of your mouth and half the time you'll end up coming out complaining about it, then the drill sergeant will get angry about you complaining, and that's the way that will go.

And the other thing Angel asked is "Did you have any free time in basic?" It depends on how well you do, and how well your platoon does. If you guys are squared away, red phase you may be getting your hour of free time a day. If not, like us you got through five-and a half to six weeks of red phase not a whole lot. You maybe get one, two letters off or you don't get free time at all, or you do shower drills for the rest of the night.

But as time goes on, you'll get more time to write those letters. You'll get more free time, you'll passes, you'll start to enjoy yourself, the drill sergeant will let off a little bit, and you'll get time to eat in the chow hall which is a wonderful, wonderful thing especially for a smaller scrawnier guy like me who needs to bulk up. It's definitely great to get more food and get more time, and to have things lessen off.

So, to sum it up to start, you don't get a whole lot of time to eat, you get three square meals a day, but you don't get a lot of time to eat. You don't get a whole lot of free time.

As you adjust to the Army life you get used to and kind of acclimatize yourself to what's going on it all starts working out you start getting used to it and you start liking what you're doing and it becomes a great place to be.
