During World War I, several buildings on the campus of the University of Richmond were used as a military hospital.

The University of Richmond during World War II

The UR campus hosted the U.S. Navy’s V-12 flight training program, during World War II.

The first commissioned officers

The Spider Battalion commissioned its first officer in January, 1935. The first female officer was commissioned in May, 1977.

The Spider Battalion: First 60 Years

During its first 60 years, from 1953 to 2013, the Spider Battalion commissioned over 1600 second lieutenants. These newly commissioned officers graduated from the University of Richmond, Longwood University, Virginia Commonwealth University, Hampden-Sydney College, Randolph-Macon College, and Virginia Union University. The Battalion has alumni in all ranks of the U.S. Army, from Second Lieutenant through Major General.
