Mr. Jon Thompson

Recruiting Operations Officer

Mr. Jon Thompson has served as the Recruiting Operations Officer since November 2013. He retired from the Army Reserve in June 2105 after 30 years of service as an Army officer. He earned his commission as a Regular Army Infantry Officer in 1985 from Wheaton College, Illinois. His initial assignment was with the 7th Infantry Division (Light) in Fort Ord, California where he deployed to the Sinai, Egypt as a member of the Multinational Force and Observers mission. In 1990, he was assigned to the 3rd Infantry Division in Schweinfurt, Germany where he commanded Company D, 1st Battalion, 15th Infantry. His final assignment before leaving active duty was with the Northern Warfare Training Center in Fort Greely, Alaska. In 1998, he joined the Army Reserve as the Operations Officer and Battalion Executive Officer for the 16th Psychological Operations Battalion, during which he deployed to Qatar and Iraq to work as a Plans Officer for the Special Operations Command – Central. Upon promotion to Lieutenant Colonel, he served with the 85th Training Support Division; commanded 2nd Battalion, 329th Regiment (Basic Combat Training), 100th Division; and as an Observer-Controller/Trainer with the 75th Training Command. His overseas deployments include serving as an Center for Army Lessons Learned liaison officer in Afghanistan, Human Terrain Team leader in Baghdad, Iraq; and finally as the Chief of Counter-Improvised Explosive Device in Regional Command (South), Kandahar, Afghanistan.

His awards and decorations include the Bronze Star Medal (OLC), Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal (OLC), Army Commendation Medal (5 OLC), Army Achievement Medal (3 OLC), Joint Meritorious Unit Award, Army Superior Unit Award (OLC), Afghan Campaign Medal (2 campaign stars), Iraq Campaign Medal (2 campaign stars), Global War on Terror Expeditionary Medal, Global War on Terror Service Medal, NATO Medal, Multinational Force and Observers Medal, Expert Infantry Badge, Ranger Tab, Parachutist Badge, and Air Assault Badge.

Mrs. Nunez

Administrative Technician

Upon graduation from high school Ms. Nunez entered the Army as an enlisted solder. She completed both her basic training and Advanced Individual Training at Ft. Jackson, SC. Her first duty station was Ft. Lewis, WA, with the 22nd Personnel Service Battalion, where she spent 18 months and did a state wide swap (switch duty locations with another person in the same grade and duty) to Ft. Irwin, CA.

Ms. Nunez finished her initial enlistment at Ft. Irwin to the USAG Garrison unit, where she spent 5 years as a soldier and ETS’d with a total of 7 years of active duty service in 2001. After active duty she began work with the Department of the Army Civil Service, at Ft. Irwin, CA, as a Non-Commissioned Officers and Officer Evaluations technician. Ms. Nunez then transferred to the DEERS (Dependent Enrollment Eligibility Reporting System) as the lead DEERS and ID Cards system manager. After reaching the top of her promotion scale and with 9 ½ years at Ft. Irwin,CA. She was hired to be the Administrative Technician at the University of Northern Iowa Army ROTC.

Mrs. Deb Ackerson

University Secretary

Began her position with the University of Northern Iowa, Department of Military Science in August 1996 and with the University in 1985. Serving as the primary administrative assistant to the Department Head; providing continuity.

Formerly worked for the University Human Resource Department; City of Cedar Falls, Office of the Mayor; John Deere Waterloo Tractor Works, Redevelopment Task Force; Department of Banking, Division of Finance Juneau, Alaska and with the Department of the Army, Secretary NCO Club, Spangdahlem Air Force Base, Germany.

Professional development training classes taken through University of Northern Iowa; Hawkeye Community College and most recently Iowa State University. Certificate programs completed Small Business and Black Hawk County Master Gardening. Cadet Command Administrative Training Certificate courses taken at Fort Lewis, WA and Fort Monroe, VA.
