LTC Jeff H. McDonald

Professor of Military Science

LTC Jeff McDonald is the chairperson for the Department of Military Science.

He is a 1996 graduate of the Reserve Officer Training Corps at Eastern Michigan University and is a native of Waterford, Michigan. He has a master's degree in policy management from Georgetown University and a master's of education from Old Dominion University.  He has held numerous leadership positions from the platoon level to action officer in the Office of the Secretary of Defense at the Pentagon.  His most recent assignment was with 1-7, Air Defense Artillery, (Patriot) Battalion located in Fort Bragg, North Carolina, where he served as the Battalion Executive Officer.

MAJ Willie McFadden

Assistant Professor of Military Science

MAJ Willie McFadden is the executive officer for the Spartan Battalion. He is a 1997 graduate of the Reserve Officer Training Corps at Eastern Michigan University. MAJ McFadden deployed in 2002 as Casualty Officer, and 2005 as C1 Plans Officer, CFLCC (Coalition Forces Land Component Command). He held additional assignments as Operations Officer, Eighth Army (CONUS) and Commanded the 478th Human Resources Company at Fort Douglas, Salt Lake City, Utah. His most recent assignment was with the DA Secretariat, Human Resources Command located at Fort Knox, Kentucky.

Mr. Michael Ashton

Training Officer

Mr. Michael J. Ashton is the training officer for the Spartan Battalion.  He graduated in 2002 from Indiana University and went on to serve with the 172nd SBCT during Operation Iraqi Freedom 2005-2006.  Mr. Ashton came to the Spartan Battalion from Indiana University where he served as the MSII instructor.  In addition to his duties with the Spartan Battalion, he is currently assigned to the 406th CSSB, an Army Reserve Unit located in Michigan.

CPT Margaret Mieras

Assistant Professor of Military Science

CPT Margaret Mieras is the Language Programs Coordinator. She holds a bachelor's from Thomas Edison College and is currently working on her master's degree in Law Enforcement Intelligence and Analysis at MSU.

CPT Mieras is a logistics officer and has over 23 years of military service including prior enlisted experience both stateside and in Germany.  She deployed to Iraq in 2007 as the Headquarters Commander for the 177th Military Police Brigade, Michigan Army National Guard.

 

 

CPT Nicholas Nelson

Assistant Professor of Military Science

CPT Nicholas Nelson is the MS 3 instructor. CPT Nelson is a Field Artillery Officer who was commissioned from Michigan State University ROTC in 2005 after receiving a BA in History. Upon graduation from the Officer Basic Course at Fort Sill, He was assigned to Fort Bragg where he deployed to both Iraq and Afghanistan. He has held numerous leadership positions at Fort Bragg including Platoon Leader and Battery Commander. CPT Nelson's previous assignment was Battery Commander for Charlie Battery, 1-321 Airborne Field Artillery Regiment.

Mr. Peter Drake

Assistant Professor of Military Science

Mr. Peter Drake is the MS 2 instructor. He is a graduate of Union College's ROTC program and earned his undergraduate degree in economics. Mr. Drake has served with the 173rd Airborne and 3rd Ranger Battalion with multiple deployments to both Afghanistan and Iraq.

Mr. Andy Harter

Assistant Professor of Military Science

Mr. Andy Harter is the enrollment officer. His Army experience includes over 30 years in both the enlisted and officer ranks. He served in the Field Artillery branch, Civil Affairs branch, in various command and staff positions and on one combat deployment to Iraq. Andy currently serves as a USAR Operations Officer for the 308th Civil Affairs Brigade in Homewood, IL.

Mr. Douglas Mulvaney

Assistant Professor of Military Science

Mr. Douglas Mulvaney is the MS I instructor. He is a graduate of the University of New Hampshire's ROTC program and earned his undergraduate degree in mathematics. He holds a master's degree in education from Central Michigan University. Mr. Mulvaney has held numerous positions in the armor branch and operation research field during his nine years as a commissioned officer.

MSG Richard Stiver

Senior Military Science Instructor

MSG Richard Stiver is the MS1 assistant instructor for the Spartan Battalion. He has served in the U.S Army for 14yrs.  He served with the 4/31INF Polar Bears, 10th MTN Division in Iraq.

SFC David Rocheleau

Military Science Instructor

SFC David Rocheleau is the assistant MS 2 instructor for the Spartan Battalion. He has served in the United States Army for fourteen years. His assignments include: Conn Barracks in Schwienfurt, Germany; Fort Riley, KS, deployed to Iraq; Ft. Polk, LA, deployed twice to Afghanistan and once to Iraq.

SFC Adam Schuessle

Military Science Instructor

SFC Adam Schuessler is the assistant MS 3 instructor for the Spartan Battalion.

SSG Benjamin Shackelton

Army Reserve College Recruiter

SSG Benjamin Shackelton is an Army Reserve recruiter/career counselor.  He has serve d in the US Army for five years.  His assignment include:  Fort Hood, TX (2nd Squadron, 3rd Armored Cavalry) and Lansing, Michigan.  He deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF 07-09).

Mr. John W. Pohl

Supply Technician

Mr. John W. Pohl began his career at the Spartan Battalion as the senior military science instructor. He retired from the Army in 2003, and assumed the supply technician position.

Ms. Susan L. Clemence

Human Resources Assistant

Ms. Susan L. Clemence is a human resources assistant. Sue started with ROTC in 1979, transferred to MSU in 1983.

Ms. Monica L. Bush

Administrative Technician (COMTek)

Ms. Monica L. Bush is a human resources assistant. Prior to coming to our department in 2004, she served for 13 years in the U.S. Army as an Admin NCO. She was stationed in Fort Hood, Texas; Fort Greely, AK; Ft. Leonardwood, MO; Mannhein, GE; and Heidelberg, GE.

Ms. Kristine McClintic

Secretary

Ms. Kristine McClintic is the information technologist/system administrator for the Department of Military Science. Kris began with the department in 1988 as the department's full time secretary.

Ms. Rosanne Baxter

Secretary

Ms. Baxter is the university secretary for the Department of Military Science. Rose has been in the department since 1990 serving as the ceremonies' event coordinator, and maintains the alumni and awards database.
