Microwave systems installer-maintainers are primarily responsible for installing, operating and maintaining microwave communications systems. They also work with associated antennas, multiplexing and communications security equipment.

The key to success for all Army operations is the ability to transmit and receive critical information and microwave communication systems play an integral role in that success. Installing, operating and maintaining microwave communication systems around the world is the job of the Microwave Systems Operator-Maintainer. In this Army career, you will be responsible for: setting up facilities, maintaining communications and technical control systems, working with antennas, multiplexing and communications security equipment, monitoring and restoring telecommunications circuits, trunk groups and communication links, and maintaining station records and reports.

This career field requires individuals who are effective communicators, team members and leaders, have an interest in communication operations and technical electronic and mechanical systems, possess critical thinking and problem solving skills and are physically and mentally fit with the ability to perform under pressure.

After completion of 10 weeks of Army Basic Combat Training you will be assigned to the U.S. Army Signal School at Fort Gordon, Georgia for 20 weeks of Advanced Individual Training. Your training will encompass technical and mechanical classroom courses with labs as well as training in a tactical field environment. Your training will give you the skills needed to perform your duties around the world. As a Microwave Systems Operator-Maintainer you will have working knowledge of mechanical and electrical principles, operation and installation of communications equipment, preventive maintenance procedures and communication security policies and procedures.

You will also be eligible for additional professional development courses and technical training which will enhance your knowledge and leadership skills. The skills, knowledge and experience you gain as a Microwave Systems Operator-Maintainer will help you in your transition from the military to the civilian work force where you may find employment in the tele-communications industry and mechanical maintenance career fields.
