M1 Armor Crewman (19K)

The M1 armor crewman is responsible for operating armored equipment such as the M1A2 Abrams to destroy enemy positions. As part of the tank and armor unit, they are ready to defend our country anywhere in the world.

During decisive moments in the heat of battle, the Army engages the most advanced mobile land-based armor vehicles in the world to disable and destroy the enemy. 

The M1 Abrams tank is operated and maintained by Soldiers working in MOS M1 Armor Crewman. 

These are strong, self-disciplined men and women, with the ability to remain calm under stress, and who are ready to defend our country anywhere in the world. 

Soldiers applying for this MOS attend fifteen weeks of One Station Unit Training at the US Army Armor School located at Fort Benning, Georgia where they train for engagement on the integrated battlefield. 

Skills learned during training include map reading and land navigation… 

…operating and maintaining an Abrams tank in all types of terrain and weather conditions… 

… movement in combat formation… 

…armor offensive and defensive tactics… 

… breaching obstacles, fortifications and barrier construction… 

…establishing firing positions… 

… target detection and identification… 

…gun turret operations and ordinance… 

… Communication through conventional technology and visual signals… 

… Operator maintenance and service on turret, weapons, controls and communication equipment… 

… and how to perform vehicle recovery and refueling operations. 

Soldiers also receive instruction on individual and crew served weapons including the M4 carbine, the M9 pistol… 

… the M240 and M2 machine guns, 

and the M1 family tank gunnery. 

After successfully completing this training, Soldiers are commonly assigned to an armored unit in support of Army missions as a Loader or Driver for an M1 Abrams tank. 

In this MOS, Soldiers train rigorously…

Not just in classrooms… but in realistic field environments… and battlefield simulators.

Discipline, physical and mental stamina, tactical and technical proficiency, and the ability to work as a member of a cohesive team are essential characteristics of an M1 Armor Crewman.

M1 Armor Crewman may have the opportunity to pursue additional military training, skill identifiers, and certifications such as M1A2 Master Gunner, Stryker Brigade Combat Team, and Air Assault.

Serving in this position, Soldiers may also have the opportunity to apply for and earn national certifications and credentials through the Army's Credentialing Opportunities On-Line website - further assisting in the transition from the military back to the civilian employment sector.
