Battalion History

Originally founded as Carlisle Military Academy in 1902, the MaverickBattalion military training was first tested during the Spanish-AmericanWar.  In 1917, the college was renamed to Grubbs Vocational College andwas immediately put to test in global conflict as the world was engulfed inWWI.  The college was renamed again in 1923 to North Texas AgriculturalCollege.  A new challenge arose in 1941 and the former students, nowsoldiers, answered the call to WWII.  It was a new kind of war withadvances in technology.  But the traditions of military excellence andleadership bore through.  The Korean War and Vietnam Conflict weretremendous challenges for the men and women who first trained at the newlyrenamed Arlington State College.  The Jodies of the Sam Houston Riflescontinued their tradition of “flawless drill”  In 1968, the name of thecollege was changed to The University of Texas at Arlington.  Under thisseal, the men and women answered the call again for Desert Storm, and nowOperation Iraqi Freedom.
