Cadet Brian Zimmerman kicks off Operation Road Runner which renews the inner state football rivalry between USD and SDSU

“ ROTC has given me the freedom to become a leader in my National Guard unit. I am now on my way to becoming an officer and achieving something great. I am not only helping to shape America but I am also supporting America by getting my degree and earning my commission. ”

Francis Schwagel, USD 08, Sisseton, SD

RANGER CHALLENGE

The Ranger Challenge is an opportunity for schools to "compete" with each other completing military tasks. In addition to a written examination where Cadets test their Army knowledge, there are physical fitness drills and field exercises. Battalions leave a Ranger Challenge with stronger bonds and sharper skills.

PERSHING RIFLES

The National Society of Pershing Rifles gives Army ROTC Cadets the opportunity to develop to the highest degree possible. Cadets can take part in precision trick rifle drill teams that provide them with the outstanding traits of leadership, military bearing and discipline.

Ranger Challenge and Buddy Ranger Challenge

The Ranger Challenge is an opportunity for schools to "compete" with each other by completing military tasks as part of a squad. In addition to a written examination where Cadets test their Army knowledge, there are physical fitness drills and field exercises. Battalions leave a Ranger Challenge with stronger bonds and sharper skills.  Buddy Ranger Challenge instills the same competitive spirit and team dynamics, but this competition is completed by two-person teams.  USD participates in the Ranger Challenge each fall and sends several teams to the Buddy Challenge each spring.

Rifle Team

Students enrolled in ROTC and Military Science classes at USD can train and compete on the Prairie Fire Battalion Rifle Team.  The students practice rifle marksmanship using 0.22 cal target rifles and compete at NRA sanctioned matches.  Students competing for the Rifle Team have an opportunity to apply for additional scholarship money through the Civilian Marksmanship Program.

Color Guard

The heart of every major event at USD and the surrounding community is epitomized by the posting of the Colors and the National Anthem.  The ROTC Color Guard has been representing the Prairie Fire Battalion at sporting events and local community services since the inception of military instruction at USD.  Any ROTC Cadet can participate in the Color Guard and earn the privilege of posting the Colors.
