“ Army ROTC at the University of Akron has added a whole new level of learning, camaraderie, and fun into my college experience. The leadership training is just one part of it. This battalion is OURS and we're leaving a legacy for every other future officer who comes through the door of this school. ”

RANGER CHALLENGE

The Ranger Challenge is an opportunity for schools to "compete" with each other completing military tasks. In addition to a written examination where Cadets test their Army knowledge, there are physical fitness drills and field exercises. Battalions leave a Ranger Challenge with stronger bonds and sharper skills.

PERSHING RIFLES

The National Society of Pershing Rifles gives Army ROTC Cadets the opportunity to develop to the highest degree possible. Cadets can take part in precision trick rifle drill teams that provide them with the outstanding traits of leadership, military bearing and discipline.

Akron Zips Tailgate Party

Every fall, the ROTC battalion holds a tailgate party prior to a University of Akron football home game at the Rubber Bowl.  Cadets, cadre, staff, alumni, and family members gather outside the stadium to show their school spirit and cheer the Zips on to victory.

Veterans Day Ceremony

Each Veterans Day, 42nd Ohio Volunteer Army ROTC Battalion cadets hold an eternal flame vigil, host a breakfast for local veterans, and conduct a wreath laying ceremony to honor veterans of all services and all eras.

Spring Military Ball

The University’s Spring Military Ball is a formal function held each spring semester.  Cadets and their guests enjoy dinner, comments from a distinguished guest speaker, and dancing in an elegant setting.  This is the first of many formal events a future Army Lieutenant would be attending.
