Overcoming the Challenge of Treadwell Tower

RANGER CHALLENGE

The Ranger Challenge is an opportunity for schools to "compete" with each other completing military tasks. In addition to a written examination where Cadets test their Army knowledge, there are physical fitness drills and field exercises. Battalions leave a Ranger Challenge with stronger bonds and sharper skills.

PERSHING RIFLES

The National Society of Pershing Rifles gives Army ROTC Cadets the opportunity to develop to the highest degree possible. Cadets can take part in precision trick rifle drill teams that provide them with the outstanding traits of leadership, military bearing and discipline.

Army ROTC Extra-Cirricular Organizations

The Red Raider Battalion offers something for everyone.  For theadventure challenge types, we have the Ranger Company, an infantry skillsgroup, and the Ranger Challenge Team, a competitive military skills team. Our program also sponsors a marksmanship club/team known as the GreyScouts.  We also have Pershing Rifles, an individual exhibition drillsquad and Corps Color Guard.  Other activities such as a trip to the Army10-miler in Washington, D.C., the annual Bataan Memorial Death March, and theGerman Proficiency Badge Military Skills Competition are sponsored by our ROTCCadet Association.

Field Training Exercises

Each fall semester our battalion conducts an extensive Field TrainingExercise (FTX) at Macy's Ranch,just south of campus, near Post, TX. We conductlive-fire M-16 ranges, day & night land navigation courses, squad tacticslanes, paintball, rappelling, and squad competitions.  In the spring, wetake a trip to Fort Sill, OK, to take advantage of the training resources of anactual Army post and basic training installation.  Each of these FTXs isconducted over a single weekend each semester.  Cadets find these trainingevents excellent opportunities to learn more about the Army and to experiencewhat it is like to be a soldier. 

Leader's Training Course (LTC)

The Leader's Training Course is a 28-day training experience for collegestudents unable to meet the basic course requirements on campus.  It is apaid 4-week summer training course at Ft. Knox, KY.  Completion of LTCallows current sophomores to enter the 2-year ROTC Advanced Course in theFall.  You could consider it the Army ROTC version of a "CLEP"course to put you on the 2-year fast-track to a commission as an Army SecondLieutenant upon graduation from Texas Tech University.
