“ Southern Illinois has some of the best outdoor activities, everything from fishing to rock climbing, plus a lot of things to do in Carbondale itself. ”

See how interesting college can be when you're a part of Army ROTC. You'll be a college student first and foremost, just like the rest of the student body, but there's a key difference: you'll have even more opportunities to succeed.

These opportunities include Field Training Exercises (FTXs) in the spring and fall where Cadets build their teamwork and leadership skills. Cadets also participate in Physical Training (PT) on a regular basis to keep up their strength and endurance.

In addition, each battalion has its own unique calendar of events and activities.

Being a part of the Saluki Battalion

Being a part of the Saluki Battalion means you will be around people with all different kinds of interests.  There are students that like to hike and camp.  Some are involved in fraternities and sororities.  There are choir members.  It is possible to be a resident assistant (RA) and make a difference in dormitory life.  A number of cadets are flight majors and enjoy flying on their spare time.  ROTC cadets set up their own intramural teams.  This kind of diversity means that you will always have people that are involved in something that you want to be a part of.

Living in Southern Illinois

Southern Illinois offers rolling hills with an abundance of National Forest and Wildlife Preserves.  Within a half hour drive you can find several good fishing lakes and hiking trailheads.  Cedar Lake is a quiet lake that is very good for kayaking and canoeing.  Just south of Carbondale you can find Giant City Park which has easy access to excellent rock climbing and walking trails.  There is also a small lake on campus with a boat house that offers small boat rental for an enjoyable morning or afternoon on the water. In Carbondale you have access to shopping malls, movie theaters, bowling alleys and much more. Southern Illinois is a blend of city-life amenities and country-life activities.

Accessing the Southern Illinois University Recreation Center

The Southern Illinois University Recreation Center is an outstanding resource for cadets.  The Center offers many different programs ranging from aerobics and spinning to outdoor excursions. The free weight room was completely renovated and re-equipped January 2009 and the machine-weight room has machines to work all the body’s muscle groups. The facility has numerous basketball and racquetball courts.  There are two large indoor tracks that can be used for sprints, jogging or walking.  There is a climbing wall and a gear rental shop that has reasonable rates for bikes, canoes, and kayaks. The swimming pool at the Rec is one of the best in the area and offers swim and scuba classes.  As a cadet at SIUC, you will be able to find your niche at the Recreation Center.
