Shippensburg University

Our History

The Raider Battalion, or formerly the Red Raider Battalion, was established at Shippensburg University in October of 1981 and since then has proudly commissioned over 400 Army officers. In 1977 the Department of the Army recognized Shippensburg University’s ROTC potential by establishing the university as a partnership program connected to the Dickinson College Blue Mountain Battalion. By 1981 Shippensburg Cadets comprised the majority of the Blue Mountain Battalion, hence generating the need to establish its own host program. Since 1981 several other local colleges and universities have served as affiliates of the Raider Battalion to include Mount Saint Mary’s College in Maryland, Penn State Mont Alto, Gettysburg College, and Wilson College. Today the Raider Battalion is only 1 of 5 Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education (PASSHE) universities with a host battalion and 1 of 42 Army ROTC programs in nine northeast states making up the 2nd Army ROTC Liberty Brigade at Ft. Dix, NJ. The Raider Battalion traditionally commissions 10-15 Army officers annually to the active component, Pennsylvania Army National Guard, and reserve component.
