Shippensburg University
During the Early Arrival Program cadets and cadre attended a baseball game in Hagerstown. The new MSI cadets came to campus early to move in before the big rush and to enjoy the activities that were planned for them by the cadre and cadets. The new cadets spent time getting their equipment issued to them, completing and obstacle course set up by the Ranger Challenge Team, meeting the cadre and MSII, MSIII, and MSIV cadets, and getting to know campus. At the end of the fun on campus, the cadre and cadets traveled to Hagerstown to enjoy a baseball game before the semester began. Everyone had a wonderful time.

“ There are many interesting activities for cadets to participate in throughout the school year. Some examples are the Early Arrival Program, Field Training Exercises, Colorguard, OPFOR, baseball games, Dining In and Dining Outs, Commander’s Calls, the Annual Shippensburg University Army ROTC 10k Run, CWSTand PT sessions. There is always something interesting to do with ROTC. ”

RANGER CHALLENGE

The Ranger Challenge is an opportunity for schools to "compete" with each other completing military tasks. In addition to a written examination where Cadets test their Army knowledge, there are physical fitness drills and field exercises. Battalions leave a Ranger Challenge with stronger bonds and sharper skills.

PERSHING RIFLES

The National Society of Pershing Rifles gives Army ROTC Cadets the opportunity to develop to the highest degree possible. Cadets can take part in precision trick rifle drill teams that provide them with the outstanding traits of leadership, military bearing and discipline.

Dining In

Each spring the MSIV’s plan a Dining Out.The contracted cadets wear their Class A uniform and and non-contracted cadetswear semi-formal attire. Cadets are permitted to bring a guest and enjoy anevening of food and fun. There is always a guest speaker for this event andShip has recently had some very interesting people such as MAJ Tom DiTomasso, known world-wide due to the movie Black Hawk Down.

Commissioning Ceremony

Each December and May several cadets arecommissioned into the United States Army during ceremonies held in the Old MainChapel. Families, friends, the University President, a guest speaker, and otherdistinguished guests take part in the commissioning ceremony. During theceremony, the cadet/soon to be 2LT is sworn in by the officer of theirchoice.  The cadet also chooses who he/she would like to pin their newlieutenant bars on them. Some choose parents, grandparents, or significantothers. Lastly, the cadet receives their first salute from the non-commissionedofficer of their choice. This event is extremely significant to the newlieutenant because it is what they have been working towards for between twoand four years.
