ARMY ROTC
ROTC OFFERS MANY OPPORTUNITIES TO EXCEL
In Army ROTC, it's not all classroom and field training. There are many opportunities for you to get to know your fellow cadets better and increase your skills in a variety of areas. Learn more about these events and activities below.

Ruck race
Cadets at NMU have numerous opportunities to prove to themselves they have the “guts” to push themselves a little further.
“ I joined the ROTC program in 2002. I joined the program because I wanted to serve something larger then myself. While in ROTC I have been given the opportunity to travel to Washington State and South Korea. I hope to join the Army as an Engineer officer in May 2007. ”
John Riley, Birmingham, MI
RANGER CHALLENGE
The Ranger Challenge is an opportunity for schools to "compete" with each other completing military tasks. In addition to a written examination where Cadets test their Army knowledge, there are physical fitness drills and field exercises. Battalions leave a Ranger Challenge with stronger bonds and sharper skills.
PERSHING RIFLES
The National Society of Pershing Rifles gives Army ROTC Cadets the opportunity to develop to the highest degree possible. Cadets can take part in precision trick rifle drill teams that provide them with the outstanding traits of leadership, military bearing and discipline.
Field Training Exercises
Normal Battalion Field Training Exercises (FTXs) happen twice a year on a weekend running from Friday to Sunday. The fall FTX is usually inthe local area and consists of land navigation, common tasks and Situational Training Exercises (STXs). The Spring FTX is usually conducted outside the local area at a nearby military installation or training area and is normally conducted jointly with another university ROTC unit. The springFTX usually consists of advanced day and night land navigation, squad and platoon tactical exercises.
