Army ROTC at Mississippi State in the beginning

Mississippi State University was originally established as MississippiA&M College, a land grant institution, on February 28, 1878. Although ROTCdid not exist in its present form, military instruction was a part of thecurriculum. The university had a strong military flavor due in part to itsfirst president, Stephen D. Lee. He was a graduate of the United StatesMilitary Academy at West Point, New York, and had been a lieutenant general inthe Confederate Army during the Civil War. During his twenty year tenure aspresident he placed tremendous emphasis on military instruction anddiscipline.
