Military History of Lincoln University
Lincoln University was founded by the Enlisted men and Officers of the 62ndand 65th Missouri Colored Volunteers. Lincoln became a Land-Grant Institutionin 1891 under the 2nd Morrill Act, which stated that military tactics would betaught by the school.
Army ROTC Comes to Campus
Reserve Officers' Training Corps (ROTC) was established at Lincoln on 1 July1950. Originally organized as an engineer branch detachment, the programconverted to a general ROTC Unit in 1955 allowing commissionees to serve in allbranches of the Army.
Prominent Figures on Campus
Army ROTC remains a viable part of the heritage of Lincoln University. AtLU, cadets may obtain a minor in Military Science indicating the high esteemheld by University administrators for military training.
Lincoln University Army ROTC: The Tradition Lives On
Since 1950, approximately 700 men and women have been commissioned throughthe LU Army ROTC Program. These lieutenants have gone on to lead distinguishedcareers as General officers, doctors, lawyers, and even one who returned as theLU President.
