“ ROTC has allowed me to participate in the Ranger Challenge Competition team. This opportunity allowed me to utilize technologies, such as the Firearms Training System (FATS); technology that wouldn’t be accessible to students that did not participate in IUP ROTC. ”

Shawn McMickle, Milford, PA

RANGER CHALLENGE

The Ranger Challenge is an opportunity for schools to "compete" with each other completing military tasks. In addition to a written examination where Cadets test their Army knowledge, there are physical fitness drills and field exercises. Battalions leave a Ranger Challenge with stronger bonds and sharper skills.

PERSHING RIFLES

The National Society of Pershing Rifles gives Army ROTC Cadets the opportunity to develop to the highest degree possible. Cadets can take part in precision trick rifle drill teams that provide them with the outstanding traits of leadership, military bearing and discipline.

Field Training Exercises

Each semester cadets are able to participate in Field Training Exercises to such places as Yellow Creek State Park, Camp Dawson, West Virginia, and Gettysburg.  During these exercises, cadets learn basic military skills, such as Rappelling, Basic Rifle Marksmanship, Land Navigation, Water Survival Training, Hand Grenade Assault Training, and how to properly negotiate an obstacle course.

Ranger Challenge

The Ranger Challenge competition is an opportunity for schools to "compete" with each other in a multitude of military tasks.  These competition tasks consist of such events as the Army Physical Fitness Test, One-Rope Bridge, Ruck Run, Land Navigation, and Weapons Assembly, to name a few.

Rho Tau Chi (Military Service Fraternity)

This fraternity was established by IUP ROTC students on 29 October 1993. It is a military service fraternity whose mission is to foster unity and support for members entering the United States Army. It's purpose is to increase communication and feelings of goodwill between the Military and the Community. As well as provide an opportunity for cadets and others to form friendships in a non-military setting.

Commissioning Ceremony

Each spring several cadets are commissioned into the United States Army during ceremonies held at IUP.   Families, friends, University Presidents and other distinguished guests take part in the commissioning as well as the ceremonial "First Salute" tradition.  This is the culminating event for any cadet.
