Battalion History

The Pirate Battalion is committed to enhancing the education experience of Hampton University students while preparing them for service as United States Army Officers.

Army ROTC at Hampton University has opportunities for scholarships, leadership development, training at Army installations over the summer, and international travel.

Cadets enrolled in Military Science classes will have the experience and credibility to reach their goals for service as Army Officers and whatever they do afterwards.

Training in the Pirate Battalion focuses on ethical decision making, critical thinking, physical fitness, reinforcing good character, and striving for personal excellence.

After four years of Army ROTC, Cadets are commissioned as Second Lieutenants in the Army upon graduation from HU. They have the option to choose between a full-time career or part-time career in seventeen different career fields.

Cadets seeking post-graduate education also have opportunities for a delayed commissioning to pursue studies as a doctor, psychiatrist, dentist, veterinarian, lawyer, or dentist.

Students who are already in college at, who are at another school and want to transfer to HU, or who are attending a community college in Virginia as part of the “2-and-2” program can participate in a 2-year program for Army ROTC in which they attend a four-week training course at Ft. Knox, KY over the summer to make up for the course credit of the first two years of Army ROTC.

Students interested in enlisting in the Army National Guard or Army Reserve, students already enlisted in the Guard or Reserve, or students with prior military service are also eligible to participate in Army ROTC and have scholarship opportunities specifically for Guard/Reserve soldiers in addition to regular Army ROTC scholarship opportunities.
