Elizabeth City State University

Viking Battalion History

The Army ROTC Program of Elizabeth City State University was established in March of 1981, under the Expand-the-Base Program. The initial host was Norfolk State University in Norfolk, Virginia. Due to changes in the geographical boundaries within the region, host support was transferred to Saint Augustine's College. In August 1987, Army ROTC at Elizabeth City State University separated from Saint Augustine's College and became an Extension Center of Norfolk State University. Since its inception, the Elizabeth City Sate University ROTC Program has commissioned over 145 cadets as Army Officers. Some of these young officers are members of the United States Army Reserve, the Army National Guard, and pursuing civilian careers. Others are on active duty serving in Army units in the United States and throughout the world.  Elizabeth City State University became a host institution in December 2000 and has been cited as the rising star in northeastern North Carolina and in the University of North Carolina system.
