General William H. Simpson served as the Professor of Military Science at Pomona College from 1932-36. A decorated veteran of WWI when he arrived to instruct Cadets, he went on to serve in WWII as the commander of the US 9th Army. Like then-Major Simpson, our current cadre brings a wealth of practical experience from the battlefield to the classroom.

Major History

LTC EVAN H. WOLLEN

PROFESSOR OF MILITARY SCIENCE

LTC Evan H. Wollen was commissioned in 1994 as a Field Artillery officer upon graduation from Amherst College in Amherst, MA and the ROTC program at the University of Massachusetts. After the Field Artillery Officer Basic Course, LTC Wollen was assigned to the 6th Battalion, 37th Field Artillery Regiment (MLRS) at Camp Stanley, Korea, where he was a Platoon Leader and Executive Officer. Returning to Fort Hood, TX in May, 1996, LTC Wollen was a Company Fire Support Officer for D Company, 1st Battalion, 5th Cavalry Regiment, deploying to Kuwait for OPERATION INTRINSIC ACTION 96-03. Upon return from Kuwait, LTC Wollen was assigned to 3d Battalion, 82nd Field Artillery Regiment (Paladin) as a Platoon Leader/Executive Officer and later as the Battalion Intelligence Officer.

After completion of the Armor Officer Advanced Course in December of 1998, LTC Wollen spent a year on the I Corps staff at Fort Lewis, WA before taking command of A Battery, 1st Battalion, 37th Field Artillery Regiment (M198) in August of 2000. During his 19 months in command of “Steel” Battery, the battery fielded the M198 Howitzer as part of the Army’s transition to the Stryker Brigade concept.

Selected to join the United States Military Academy (USMA) faculty, starting in 2002 LTC Wollen attended The Ohio State University for graduate school. As a graduate student, he helped teach both the World War II and 20th Century American Military History survey courses. Specializing in World War I, he wrote his Master’s Thesis on the formation and officer training of the American Expeditionary Force, receiving his Master’s in Military History in 2004.

Moving to USMA, LTC Wollen was a Professor of History from 2004-2007. He taught the required year-long military history course (History of the Military Art), an upper class elective on operational and strategic decision-making (Generalship and the Art of Command), and directed eight Senior Theses on World War I topics. He also volunteered as the coach of the Women’s Army Rugby team, leading them to a #1 National ranking in the fall of 2006.

After graduating from the Combined and General Staff School (CGSC) in June, 2008, LTC Wollen was assigned to the 4th HBCT/1st Armor Division at Fort Bliss, TX where he was the Brigade Fire Support Officer, the Operations Officer for 2nd Squadron, 13th (US) Cavalry Regiment, and the Executive Officer for 2nd Battalion, 29th Field Artillery Regiment. A veteran of OPERATION IRAQI FREEDOM, LTC Wollen’s most recent assignment was as the Deputy Director of the Combat Studies Institute at Fort Leavenworth, KS. In that capacity, he was responsible for all of the military history instruction in the U.S Army’s training and education systems to include theField Historian Course.

A native of the great state of New Jersey, LTC Wollen is a graduate of the U.S. Army’s Airborne School and is also an International Rugby Board Licensed Rugby Educator.

LTC Wollen is currently assigned as the 35th Professor of Military Science at Claremont McKenna College.
