The Sun DevilĀ® Battalion

The Department of Military Science at Arizona State University (ASU Army ROTC) was founded in 1935 and is located on the main campus in Tempe.  The mission of the Sun Devil Battalion is to produce 2nd Lieutenants for the United States Army through a rigorous four year curriculum that trains qualified college students and develops them into leaders.

Located in the heart of the Phoenix metropolitan area, Arizona State University is a world-class institution with an enrollment of approximately 60,000 students, spread across 4 campuses.  Arizona State has research I status and nearly 200 academic programs.

The Sun Devil Battalion consists of the primary Battalion on the Tempe campus, a detachment on the ASU East campus, and the Grand Canyon company located at Grand Canyon University (GCU) in central Phoenix.  The Samaritan School of Nursing at GCU boasts a tremendous academic reputation and has earned a Partnership in Nursing Excellence agreement with the United States Army.  GCU nurses historically average among the highest nurse licensing board scores within the United States Army’s Cadet Command.

In addition to the traditional ROTC curriculum, Sun Devil cadets have the opportunity to participate in the Desert Rangers Small Unit Tactics Club, the Scabbard and Blade Honor Fraternity, or become a member of the Battalion Color Guard.  The Sun Devil Battalion also sends teams of cadets to participate in Ranger Challenge, a skills competition that test cadets mastery of basic military tasks while working as a team, and the Bataan Memorial Death March in New Mexico.

The Sun Devil Battalion is a five time recipient of the General Douglas MacArthur Award, which recognizes the best large school Army ROTC programs.  The Sun Devil Battalion has also produced the Association of the United States Army’s Annual Task Force Smith Award recipient, while GCU company has produced multiple Golden Bear Nursing Excellence award recipients, the most recent being awarded in 2008.

Today’s corps of cadets consists of approximately 150 ASU and GCU cadets with program recently commissioning 22 new lieutenants into the ranks of the United States Army.
