Inside the Tech: Virtual MRAP

It's Mike Green's turn behind the wheel in an MRAP simulator as U.S. Army Top Fuel driver Tony Schumacher adds virtual hazards and obstacles each step of the way.

Scott Johnston, Project Leader, Army Game Studio
Mike Green, Crew Chief, U.S. Army Top Fuel Dragster
Tony Schumacher, Driver, U.S. Army Top Fuel Dragster
Tony Schumacher: Explain this to me, my crew chief, Mike Green is doing a great job driving. We need to make it more difficult before that man wants my job driving.
Scott Johnston: What this system does, is it teaches you how to properly maneuver and a couple different variances of that MRAP. (video of Mike Green driving MRAP/avoiding obstacles) As an instructor, you have a lot of different capabilities to throw curve balls at him, right, so you can throw down enemy fires, throwing ah, shooting AK-47s, RPGs, you can setup an ambush, ah, where he possibly hits an IED and the crew has to react to that, you know, the way they would in the field.
Tony Schumacher: So let's get after this boy, and, ah, show him some real training (video of Mike Green driving MRAP through more difficult obstacles)
Scott Johnston: Wow! He's doing great.
Tony Schumcher: What a crew chief. Take my job, Mikey. I'll start tuning the car.
Tony Schumacher: (laughs) He's an animal. I'm just proud of him. (video of Mike Green driven MRAP being struck by a roadside bomb) There you go. A lot of these little (trails off)... we can't, we can't flip him upside down, but he's stuck against a rock because he can't figure out reverse. That's my kind of crew chief.
