PAM NORMAN, SENIOR DIRECTOR OF CORPORATE RELATIONS, KIWANIS INTERNATIONAL
I serve as the senior director of corporate relations managing partnerships and non-dues revenue programs for Kiwanis International. The U.S. Army holds the distinction of being one of the oldest and most valued partnerships in our portfolio of over 30 partner organizations.
Q: How does your work align with that of the U.S. Army’s education outreach efforts?
Like the U.S. Army, Kiwanis is working to prepare our student members to become active leaders in their community. Through exposure to Army education benefits, Key Club and Circle K members are able to consider military service as a vehicle for attaining education and leadership goals. Additionally, the March2Success program is widely used by our members as a free online study program to help prepare for standardized testing.
Q: What about the U.S. Army has surprised you through your involvement?
Over the years, I have learned much about the U.S. Army and what has surprised me most is the vast array of professional careers available through military service. Realizing that students can not only prepare for life after service but also pursue careers such as law enforcement, engineering, healthcare and technology within the Army ranks has allowed our student members to explore opportunities beyond civilian life. Sharing these opportunities with our student and adult members has been the hallmark of our partnership.
Q: How has your partnership with the Army made a difference to Kiwanis International?
Kiwanis International seeks partners who align with our mission values and through this partnership, we expose Key Club and Circle K members to shared values important to both organizations: leadership, education and service. These shared values are brought to life through partnership activities of community engagement and education delivered by an Army Speakers Bureau, leadership and career exploration workshops at the Key Club and Circle K conventions, and shared community service activities.
Q: What has been your most interesting or memorable experience or interaction with the U.S. Army?
Without a doubt, the ceremonies associated with recognizing service have been memorable for me. Whether it is for new recruits committing to basic training or a Change of Command ceremony, the shine of anticipated future events and highlighting achievements is always inspiring. Each Army story is unique and I always enjoy learning about the personal journeys of individual soldiers.
Q: Why do you feel military service should be considered a viable post-secondary option?
The cost of higher education continues to soar in America and many students need the affordable alternatives offered by the Army for the pursuit of education and training. Add to that the excellent leadership training and you've got a winning combination that meets the needs of many who are considering post-secondary options.
Q: Why do you feel it is important to support the Army as a leader in your community?
With a mission to prepare future leaders as well as provide educational opportunities, it is my honor to support and endorse the U.S. Army. We need more people in community leadership roles sharing the Army story. With stellar benefits such as money for education, health care, retirement plans and competitive salaries, a career with the U.S. Army is an option worthy of consideration.
