Madhusha Goonesekera watched a computer screen in a darkened room Wednesday morning as he and his teammates raced to stop a sulfuric acid spill in a chemical plant. The West High student’s finger slid across a touchscreen panel, calculating and then creating the right amount of ammonium hydroxide to neutralize the corrosive acid. The chemical spill scenario was one part of a computer simulation that tested students’ abilities in science, technology, engineering and math aboard the U.S. Army STEM Experience trailer, which visited West High School on Wednesday.
