U.S. ARMY HELPS HOUSTON-AREA HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS EXPERIENCE COLLEGE LIFE
The U.S. Army’s partnership with the LULAC National Education Service Centers (LNESC) serves to connect the Army to key prospect audiences within the nation’s Hispanic community. The partnership also allows local Army representatives to establish relationships with the LNESC center students, directors and staff, as well as the influencers the LNESC staff reach within their community. As a partner to Army at both the national and local level, LNESC helps to increase awareness and advocacy for Army service as a path towards educational and professional success.
The College Visits are half-day college information workshops for high school juniors and seniors conducted on Army ROTC campuses in six markets. Local Army representatives, LNESC staff and University administration officials conduct a series of presentations on admissions requirements, financial aid, and scholarships. Participating students eat lunch with local Soldiers and cadets who share their Army stories and then escort the students on a tour of their respective campuses.
This is the fifth year Army has partnered with LNESC to conduct College Visit events. The intent of these events is to raise awareness among high school students of the many opportunities available to them in pursuit of a college degree, as well as the many opportunities available to them to achieve their academic goals and professional ambitions through the Army.
Over the past few months, events took place in St. Louis, MO; Albuquerque, NM; San Antonio, TX; Houston, TX; Arlington, TX and San Diego, CA, where more than 650 students from local high schools participated.
At the LNESC College Visit at the University of Houston, which took place on February 27 in Houston, TX, the Army highlighted various career and educational opportunities through multiple activities during the visit, including a leadership workshop entitled, “Leading Winning Teams: How to Lead Teams and Empower your Team to Lead.” Students also applied what they learned by solving real-life leadership challenges through a series of different scenarios.
At the Lunch and Learn, students heard from ROTC cadets and Soldiers about their experiences in the Army and provided a picture of their day-to-day lives as service members.
