“Make time for the things that matter to you.”
In 2015, Sgt. 1st Class Phillip Kennedy Johnson began a second career writing comics and graphic novels. Since then, he has been published by DC, Marvel, BOOM! Studios, and many others, telling stories with such established characters properties as Batman, Aquaman, Planet of the Apes, Kong, Jim Henson’s The Dark Crystal, and Adventure Time. With both licensed comics and his original stories, Johnson feels it’s important to tell stories that matter. “I’m incredibly fortunate to have a career as a storyteller,” says Johnson. “Comics offer almost unparalleled creative freedom. They give me the means to not only tell stories that are important to me, but to also make them entertaining and fun, which makes them more powerful.” Johnson was nominated in 2018 for the most prestigious award in the comics industry-the Will Eisner Award, and one of his graphic novels, "The Last Sons of America," will be brought to life as a Netflix original movie. Johnson plays the trumpet in the Army Field Band in Washington, D.C. "It's great to have a job where you not only get to do what youlove, but you're doing it for reasons that really matter," says Johnson.
