ARMY SOLDIERS INSPIRE KIWANIS DISTRICT CONVENTION ATTENDEES TO LEADERSHIP AND EDUCATIONAL EXCELLENCE
As part of the ongoing partnership between the U.S. Army and Kiwanis International, U.S. Army Soldiers joined high school Key Clubs in Portland, Oregon to participate in the Pacific Northwest Key Club District Convention.
Both Kiwanis and the U.S. Army are dedicated to education, service and leadership. Not only do the organizations share these values, but the ongoing local activations between the local Kiwanis clubs and U.S. Army Soldiers has proven to be beneficial in the communities around the country.
Subsequently, Kiwanis invited the Army to engage more than 2,300 high school students in the Pacific Northwest district at the convention and speak with them about the leadership and education opportunities available through military service. The Army not only participated in the service fair and engaged with students about ROTC scholarships and leadership positions, but the Soldiers also conducted a leadership workshop, called “Human Scrabble.”
“Human Scrabble” is designed for participants to work together in groups to figure out Scrabble-inspired word construction challenges. During the workshop, student’s teamwork, leadership and quick-thinking skills were put to the test, and the workshop concluded with a group discussion on how to bring these learnings back to their own high school Key Clubs.
The attendance at the workshop was so successful that students were spilling into the hallway as they participated in the activity.
As the U.S. Army continues to participate in Kiwanis events throughout the year, both organizations are confident that their work will inspire students to pursue leadership roles and post-secondary education opportunities to shape their career paths and professional successes.
