THE ENDLESS POSSIBILITIES OF AMEDD’S HEALTH PROFESSIONS SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM (HPSP)
A career in Army medicine offers endless possibilities to pursue an invigorating career path that gives back to help others. The U.S. Army is one of the world’s largest health systems that comprises the following corps: medical, dental, nurse, veterinary, medical service and medical specialist. For those pursuing an advanced medical degree, the Army provides one of the most comprehensive scholarships available in the health care field – the Health Professions Scholarship Program (HPSP).
The HPSP is for students pursuing higher education in medicine after completing their bachelor degree. Medical students can qualify for the HPSP and have 100 percent of the tuition for a graduate-level healthcare degree paid for at the school of their choice. The scholarship is offered in the medical, dental, veterinary, psychology, optometry and specialty nursing fields.
HPSP recipients qualify for monthly stipends of more than $2,200 to defray other educational and general living costs. Once in practice, AMEDD officers are reimbursed for continuing education and the cost of sub-specializing or acquiring additional credentials. HPSP also covers the costs of books, equipment and other school fees, and provides a monthly allowance for food and housing.
With HPSP, Army medical students can spend their days focused on their education and their training — learning to treat patients to the best of their abilities. Upon graduation, Soldiers can come out ahead with a $20,000 signing bonus and have the Army’s support during residency. Soldiers automatically have a job on the Army healthcare team with endless possibilities of traveling the world and helping local communities, fellow Soldiers, veterans and their families.
Short-term humanitarian, disaster relief and training missions are just some of the fulfilling opportunities that allow Army medical professionals to apply their skills overseas. For those who prefer to put down roots, extended stays in one location may be an option too.
The HPSP provides financial stability to those pursuing a medical career. Through the Army, Soldiers receive an instant community and support system of medical professionals, job stability and invaluable training not found in the civilian sector.
