ROTC grad turned astronaut

USM ROTC has been home to many prominent military figures throughout history.

In 1962 Cadet Dewitt T. Irby, Jr. attended USM and participated inROTC.  Irby went on to have an extremely successful career in ArmyAviation and reached the rank of Major General.

USM as a University has hosted many Military enthusiasts who have made great strides for ROTC and the Army as a whole.

Robert Stewart graduated from USM in 1964 and became an Army Astronaut in19783  He made two flights on the Challenger in 1984 and the Atlantisin  1985 for a total of 289 hours in space.  He retired from the Armyin 1992 as a Brigadier General. 

In 1977 Jeff Hammond was a cadet and the Golden Eagle quarterback thatyear.  He went on to be a Brigadier General in the Army.
