A Proud History-A Bright Future
The Northern Arizona University ROTC Battalion has been proud to help
develop the leaders of tomorrow.

The Department of Military Science
at Northern Arizona University (NAU) was established on September 5, 1980 as
an extension center of the Arizona State University Army ROTC program. A
Major and a Sergeant First Class were assigned in the summer of 1981.
Classes began the fall semester of that year.

Host Status Awarded
Host status was granted to the Northern Arizona University Army ROTC program
in the fall of 1982. The first class of commissionees was in May 1983
with thirteen cadets receiving their gold bars. By the fall of 1983 the
cadre and staff for the program had totaled five officers, four NCOs, one
Department of the Army civilian (DAC), and one university secretary.

Branching Out
In early 1986 a Cross Enrollment Agreement was signed with Embry-Riddle
Aeronautical University (ERAU) in Prescott, Arizona. In 1987, ERAU
commissioned their first three lieutenants. ERAU’s affiliation continues
to be a major part of the NAU program with considerable interface occurring
between the cadre and students in both programs.

The Two Companies of Lumberjack Battalion
Both ROTC detachments are currently very active in local university and
civic events as well as within the ROTC community. Under the umbrella of
the Lumberjack Battalion both schools have well established companies – the Axe
Company at NAU and the Eagle Company at ERAU.
