Specialist Nelly Medel

I joined the Army because I was ending my time in high school.

Hello my name is Specialist Nelly Medel, I'm 21 years old, I'm a military police officer for the United States Army. I was born in Riverside, California. I joined the Army because I was ending my time in high school. I realized that a lot of the senior friends that I have that had already graduated, they really didn't have jobs and they had nothing going for them. A lot of the people down on my block used to sit in the corner of my street and sell drugs. My brother reached out to me and told me he was going to join the Navy. And he told me if I was interested in joining the military with him. I really didn't think the Navy was right for me because they spend more time on boats and just out over seas. I really like to reach out to people and help them. So I thought joining as an MP in the military maybe I could do some special missions and really reach out to the community and the public.
I ended up joining the Army in June of 2007. I've been stationed at Fort Bragg, North Carolina and it's my first unit. I went to airborne school back in January 2008. It was one of the best experiences that I had. Definitely got rid of my fear of heights. I know jump from 1200 feet in the air and I love every second of it.
