The Non-Standard Physical Fitness Test, Sappers go above and beyond in the first hours of the competition.
This is the 2010 Best Sapper Competition, designed to single out the best of the best in the Army engineer field. Day one, 0400 hours, the non-standard physical fitness test and the start of the competition.
As part of the Task, Conditions and Standards for the non-standard physical fitness test, each Sapper team performs as many pull-ups, sit-ups and push-ups as possible in the time period given for each exercise. At least one Sapper from each team must be performing an exercise movement at all times during the test or risk being disqualified.
After completing back-to-back calisthenics the teams move on to the three-mile buddy run. Sappers are required to wear an Outer Tactical Vest with ballistic plates, which weighs more than 24-pounds, and carry their M4 rifle. Each two-man team must stay within arms length of each other at all times.
As the first points of the competition are tallied all eyes are on the next event.
