The final event of the competition. The Sappers dig deep to find the energy to finish strong.
Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri. Home to the U.S. Army’s Engineer Sappers and the 2010 Best Sapper Competition. To get to this point competitors have performed a nonstandard physical fitness test, 15 lanes of challenges, a helocast, 15 mile ruck march and a twelve mile land navigation course. Now with just ten teams remaining there is one more event to go. The X mile run. So named because the teams have no idea how many miles they will have to cover before it’s all over. But, there’s more to this event than just running. The Sappers also perform a multitude of tasks before they cross the finish line and find out who will be named Best Sapper Team 2010.
Winners: SOTs
Now at long last the 2010 Best Sapper competition winners Captain Byrnes and Captain Castro from Charlie Company 554 Engineer Battalion Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri.
Capt. Byrnes: We knew going into it that we’re not going to max out every event. We’re going to be tired at some events and not going to be able to do the best at everything. And so being able to communicate with each other clear and say ‘hey, we screwed that lane up. We have to suck it up and drive on to the next lane and do our best there.’
Capt. Castro: In a competition like this there’s also a piece of it has to go your way. I mean everyone in the competition, I would say knows the task and knows how to do it. But when you’re exhausted and you’re tired sometimes things don’t go your way and you get down on yourself. The biggest part that I think that we did well was we did poorly on one or two events but we were able to brush it off and then do really, really well on the next couple.
