In 1866, Congress pushed through legislation allowing blacks the right
to serve during peacetime, resulting in the forming of
six all black units. In 1869, these units were called to serve in the
ongoing Indian wars that troubled the West. During this period, the Native
Americans began referring to the black Soldiers as "Buffalo Soldiers" because
of physical characteristics and their respect for the black Soldiers'
fighting abilities.
