I'm Sergeant First Class Michael Hosier, 15 Tango, UH-60 Black Hawk crew chief. Hometown is Bradenton, Florida.
I joined the Army Reserve when I was back in high school. I did the split option. I was a junior in high school, decided I wanted to do something different and didn't know what I wanted to do after I graduated high school. So I joined the military, joined the Army Reserve.
I chose the admin field figuring that would open up different doorways in the business world, admin in case that's what I wanted to do.
I actually kind of did a few different things. I started in the Army Reserve and then transitioned after doing that for about three years, four years decided I wanted to go active duty. To see what the active duty life was like. So I went active duty, did that for 4 years. Then transitioned out of active duty back into the Army Reserve.
And when I did that transition, my hometown in Florida, I happen to have a brand new aviation unit standing up, Black Hawks. I was excited and thought I would try to get into that unit and applied and talked to people and got into that unit, in Black Hawks specifically.
First and foremost where I maintain. We maintain the aircraft, where mechanics for the aircraft. When something goes wrong we fix it. Our secondary role is we get in the window and we man the guns and we also help them with their crew coordination and the air space surveillance and just the regular duties that they perform we assist.
When we go to land in confined areas, rocky areas, slopes they count on us to be their eyes for areas of the aircraft that they can't see. Cause they can't see behind them and they can't see their tail rotor, we make sure that they're clear.
Some of the biggest challenges in the Black Hawk would be just the maintenance that you have to keep up on to fly. So the duty day doesn't stop when the blades stops turning, we as crew chiefs still have to stay behind and put the aircraft back in a ready state for the next day for its missions. So it's ready to go when the time comes.
Some of the exciting things that I've done as a crew chief in the Black Hawk helicopter is go through deck landing on Navy ships. Fly around to different places and do different training from different parts of the United States that a lot of people don't get to go to or that people have seen.
One of the most exciting things is just work with all the individuals that you get to meet. You go from unit to unit and you meet new people and that's exciting as well.
My advice for someone coming into the Army Reserve is; it's a great opportunity. It's a good opportunity regardless of how long you serve. Think about what your career path is going to be. Do the best you can at that job to better yourself.
