Cathy: John has said from the day he started talking, 'I'm going to be a Soldier when I grow up.' So it was something that wasn't unexpected, and wasn't a surprise.
John: I enlisted the day after my 17th birthday, and went to Basic Training at Fort Benning 30 days later.
Cathy: He'd been in the same small town for his whole life, and I thought it would be good for him to see some other places and some other cultures and some other things.
John: It's just something I always wanted to do?serve my country and be a Soldier.
Cathy: Apparently, he was made to be a Soldier because he's done well, he has. It's been good for him and I think he's been good for the Army.
