2009 EPISODE 6 of 12: STRESS SHOOT

Soldiers must move as a team through six designated firing positions and engage in 15 rifle targets, 9 grenade targets and 18 pistol targets.

Now, six hours into a 59-hour event, the Ranger Buddies are Ruck Marching, with all of their combat gear and a 60-pound pack, on their way to Malone 16.
TCS: Task: negotiate the range as a team. Conditions: during daylight hours, armed with an M4 assault rifle, the M203 grenade launcher and the M9 pistol, engage structures and steel reactive targets. Standards: move as a team through six designated firing positions; engage 15 rifle targets, 9 grenade targets and 18 pistol targets.
COL Douglas Flohr: "What's significant about it is that you have to engage targets with the M4, the M203 and the 9mm. And what we like about this range is that you get instant feedback. It's steel on steel. So, if there are any engaged targets, the targets go down. With the 203, you see an orange marking round actually hit the door. And there's also some stress because it's spread out across the range, so teams have to run from point to point. And that's where you see the team really, where they're coordinating, where they're talking together, to pick which one is actually going to engage the targets with the M4 and which one is going to engage with the 203. So, by talking to each other as they move across the range, they can figure out which individual needs to engage the targets and which one can kind of lay back as they move through the range."
Team 21, Stackpole and Simms, overtook Zajkowski and Jenkins on the machine gun range, but after the second Stress Shoot, they only lead by seven points.
SFC Blake A. Simms: "Our part of the competition has actually done pretty good. We have a pretty good game plan. In the beginning, everybody took off in a sprint. We just kept the pace. We're going to keep the pace all day, and we're going to do it all the way up to the Road March tonight. So, we're doing pretty good, I feel."
"Alright gentlemen, you have approximately five minutes to refill your water, reconfigure your kit and get ready to move out onto the Orienteering course."
SFC Victor Birdseye III: "Orienteering is moving from one point to another point using terrain features and land-navigation technique. For the unknown distance, it should take them approximately two hours to move from point A to point B."
The task is to conduct a cross-country orienteering move from Malone 18 to Combz PZ. Each team is issued a map and compass. The mission is to successfully land navigate four points on the map culminating at Combz PZ for the next event. They must complete the task within three hours or receive zero points. The fastest time wins.
Next time on BRC 2009: 18 hours into the Best Ranger, the Expedient Litter Carry and then the Separator -an all-night-road-march for an unknown amount of time and distance.
SFC Gerald L. Nelson: "Now, the road march, as everyone knows, is the separator. It separates the men from the boys. It'll let you know who the contenders and the pretenders are."
