Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri. The 2010 Best Sapper Competition. Next up: The round robin. In this phase of the competition the best of the Army’s elite combat engineers negotiate a six-mile course, stopping at seven stations where they perform a variety of tasks ranging from basic soldiering to engineer specific duties. Teams are required to carry their ruck, weapon and tactical equipment. Air transportation is provided between two of the stations as well as ground transportation back to headquarters upon completion. We caught up with some of the teams waiting for a ride.
Teamwork: SOTs Team 8: A lot of the events, for example the manual breach, where you’re hauling the dummy, all your crap through all the obstacles, there was no way one person was doing it alone.
Yea, you definite can’t do it on your own, I means it's kind of every task we’ve done there’s something one person can do, while the other person’s knocking out something else.
Teams from all over the world have converged here to find out who is the best Sapper team for 2010.
Fun: SOTs
We love this. This is the Super Bowl. It doesn’t matter and if I don't do well it just fun.
I’m a little bit more tired than I expected at this point, but I'm still good.
Team 16: It's only day one, but it's fun though. We asked to do this.
With two phases complete the Army engineer teams are starting to wonder how they stack up against the competition.
How you're doing: SOTs How do you feel like you're doing today?
Team 8: Better than so-so.
Team 16: I feel pretty good right now. We'll see how day two turns out though. Doing a lot better than we thought we would.
