U.S. Army Values
U.S. Soldiers live by a certain set of core values.
U.S. Soldiers live by a certain set of core values. In the wake of the disastrous earthquake in Haiti, one Army lieutenant is embodying the values of duty and selfless-service while deployed to Kandahar, Afghanistan.
When I became a Soldier, I accepted the sacrifices that came with it.
1st Lieutenant Thierry Magloire was born and raised in Haiti. In spite of his desire to be there helping the island nation and his family, he knows he has a job to do here in southern Afghanistan.
It happened to be my turn to support the mission here. Being here and seeing what's on TV about what's going on after the earthquake really hurt. Because like many other Haitian American Soldiers who have family in Haiti, knowing that they do not have a place to live or might not, that they might not have sufficient food to eat you really have to be inhuman not to get affected by what's going on.
Battling through the effects of his personal losses in Haiti, Lieutenant Magloire continues to persevere during his deployment; he does so through his own personal courage. But also knowing that in the same way he dedicates himself to his duty here, he can count on fellow troops to provide relief in Haiti.
I feel confidence in the troops that are there, who are helping the Haitian people with the earthquake, and I'll keep them in my prayers.
From Kandahar Air Field, Afghanistan I'm Lance Corporal AJ Lugo.
