Inside the Tech: Helicopter Simulators
Tony Schumacher-the winningest driver in NHRA history-competes head-to-head with crew chief Mike Green in U.S. Army's flight simulators.
Jamie Bishop, Kiowa Pilot, Kiowa Training Expert
Brad Bankster, CH47F Systems Integration Expert, Chinook Trainer
Mike Green, Crew Chief, U.S. Army Top Fuel Dragster
Tony Schumacher, Driver, U.S. Army Top Fuel Dragster
Brad Bankster: This is a CH47F Seal Chinook
Tony Schumacher: So all new engineering and anything electrical, ah, computerized, will be tried out here, they'll have a pilot come in and try to fly it and see how it integrates with the helicopter itself?
Brad Bankster: Yes, sir.
Tony Schumacher: Outstanding
Mike Green: I think I can fly this thing, what do you think?
Tony Schumacher: Yeah, I think it's big and slow, you outta be good at it. I'm gonna go fly the Kiowa see if I can keep that big boy in the air.
Mike Green: Well let's see who can keep theirs in the air longer (Tony/Mike fist bump)
Tony Schumacher: You got it!
(Tony/Jamie inside Kiowa simulator)
Tony Schumacher: Alright, Jamie, man, what an awesome machine, but why is this Kiowa simulator so important?
Jamie Bishop: It's very important. Down at Fort Rucker we have six of these training devices and at our schoolhouse there, the students start at the schoolhouse and learn to press all the buttons and switches. Learn where everything's at; that way we can teach them at the schoolhouse and they don't go out to the aircraft and make the mistakes they would normally make if they didn't have that instruction prior to going out to the flight.
Tony Schumacher: Preparation equals results, man. You prepare in a simulator like this, you keep people safe, let them learn the numbers, let them learn the training before they go off in the theatre and do the job for real. Its awesome! Thank you.

Mike Green: Alright Tony, so how did you do?
Tony Schumacher: Oh, you'd have to ask my instructor Jamie, but I think we nailed it pretty good.
Jamie Bishop: I'd give him a 9., (pause) 9.75825
Tony Schumacher: And that's not a made up number either, man.
Mike Green: That, That, That's pretty accurate! (all laugh) That's better than I got. I got 9 out of 10, so, awesome job!
Tony Schumacher: Awesome. (Tony/Mike high-five)
